Overwatch 2 Launches To Disappointing 50K Concurrent Steam Users

Extremely Low Numbers For Free-to-Play Game!

Overwatch 2 was released in October last year as the replacement for 2016’s Overwatch. Though the game was not available on Steam, it has recently joined the popular PC platform.

However, it did not get the welcome that Blizzard had likely hoped for. Despite being a free-to-play game, it launched to just over 50K concurrent players on Steam.

Why it matters: Recent releases like Baldur’s Gate 3 have reached over 800K concurrent players on the platform. While Overwatch 2 has an inherent advantage due to its free-to-play nature, it could not reach an impressive number of players.

At the time of writing, over 50K players are active in Overwatch 2. A game like Naraka: Bladepoint has reached over 260K concurrent players after going free-to-play recently.

As such, this is not an impressive player count for Overwatch 2. The fact that the FPS title was already available to users through a different platform may have led to little interest in the recent launch.

In addition to the low player counts, the game was met with a slew of negative reviews on Steam. Nearly 90% of the Steam reviews are currently negative, making it a strong contender for the worst Steam release to date.

The negative reviews have pointed to microtransaction prices as one of the biggest flaws. Many are also upset with Blizzard’s broken promises on the PVE mode.

Nonetheless, Overwatch 2 has not been on the platform for too long. While it may continue to grow in terms of player counts, its reputation might stay tarnished after a controversial release from Blizzard.
