PlayStation Will Add First-Party Games To PS Plus After 1 or 2 Years

Continuing Strategy For PS Plus Extra And Premium!

Gaming subscriptions have become increasingly popular in the gaming industry, allowing users to access several titles at a cheap monthly cost. While subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass provide first-party titles at release, Sony has no plans to change their strategy.

In a recent interview, PlayStation’s Vice President confirmed they do not plan to add first-party titles on PS Plus before a year or two of their release.

Why it Matters:  Microsoft is leading the charge with subscription services, with the day-one releases being a highlight for Xbox Game Pass. However, Sony is content with its existing strategy.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, PlayStation’s Vice President, Nick Maguire, stated they are happy with their strategy. He further said:

“Putting games in a bit later in the life cycle has meant we can reach more customers 12, 18, 24 months after they have released. For us, that’s working.”

PlayStation recently added Horizon Forbidden West to PS Plus Extra. Previously, a short trial was available to PS Plus Premium members, but the full game joined the service a year after its release.

Sony believes the current strategy of adding first-party games a few years later to PlayStation Plus is working well. As such, the gaming giant does not have plans to change this strategy anytime soon.

However, PlayStation has also provided day-one titles. Games like Stray were released on PS Plus Extra at launch, joining the small list of day-one games on PlayStation’s subscription service.

Nick Maguire further stated that PlayStation would continue to work on its strategy and evolve based on the expectations and demands of gamers.

Previously, Sony admitted that Xbox Game Pass is the superior subscription offering.

However, both subscriptions have allowed users access to hundreds of high-quality titles. New games are constantly added each month, ensuring that users have plenty of games to enjoy.

PlayStation owners can subscribe to PS Plus Extra and enjoy first-party titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, and more. PS Plus Premium also provides access to classic games from older consoles like PSP and PS1.

The most expensive tier, PS Plus Premium, has also promised to introduce a streaming option for PS5 games. This feature will join the Premium tier at a later date, providing even more benefits for PlayStation users.
