Redfall was set to be Microsoft’s first big AAA title after the acquisition of Bethesda Softworks. However, the game saw criticism even before release, after Arkane Studios announced it would skip 60 FPS on Xbox Series X|S at launch.
Despite these concerns, many had hoped that the game would turn out to be another success from Arkane Studios, but this has not been the case. Redfall has a Metascore of 64 on the Xbox Series X and 62 on PC.
This also means that Redfall has become the lowest-rated game from Arkane Studios.
Why it matters: Microsoft has faced criticism for its first-party line-up with the Xbox Series S|X consoles, and 2023 was expected to change this with big hitters like Redfall, Forza Motorsport, and Starfield.
Arkane Studios has made its reputation in the gaming industry for years by releasing quality games like Dishonored, Deathloop, and Prey. These games have been a massive success for the studio and are remembered fondly to this day.
Given Redfall’s reception, Arkane Studios’ track record has taken a hit. Before its release, the lowest-rated game from Arkane was Arx Fatalis, released in 2003. The game had a Metascore of 71, and Readfall’s score is much lower than the former lowest-rated game.
Moreover, fans should also remember that Redfall has just been released, and more reviews are expected to arrive soon. This could mean the score may increase or go down even further, but it is likely to remain Arkane Studios’ worst release by a large margin.
With the lack of a 60FPS mode at launch, active internet connection requirement, and negative reception, Redfall may not be worth the $70 asking price. However, players who want to try the game can play it with Xbox Game Pass.
