$368 Million Opening At Global Box Office!

The much anticipated Super Mario Bros movie has finally been released. While the film was off to a rocky start with critic reviews, it has since bounced back with an excellent audience review rating on sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, with a 96% score on the latter.

Nintendo appears to have succeeded in providing a fun experience for fans of the long-running franchise, and it looks like Mario’s success on the big screen is just beginning to reach its peak.

As reported by Deadline, Super Mario Bros is currently on track for a $368 Million opening at the global box office. This would make it the best opening for an animated movie yet.

Super Mario Bros Movie

Super Mario Bros is currently competing with iconic animated movies like Frozen 2, which previously held the record mentioned above at $352 Million.

Looking at other statistics, the movie has managed to outpace 2023 releases like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania, becoming the biggest global opening this year. This is commendable for a gaming IP, given the anticipation and legacy built around the existing MCU platform.

Super Mario Bros has also become the biggest domestic opening for Illumination, the animation studio.

The movie’s success may also inspire future gaming adaptations. Recently, voice actor Jack Black also expressed interest in a Red Dead Redemption adaptation. The voice actor believes it could have a lot of potential and that it is even better than PlayStation’s The Last of Us.
