Xbox Series S|X consoles have been out for over two years. Microsoft offered incredible value for both consoles at their price points, and the value proposition was further highlighted when PS5 prices were increased in certain regions.
However, Microsoft had already hinted at a similar price uplift for Xbox Series S|X consoles at some point. While this did not take effect during the holiday season, it looks like the first price increase from Microsoft is coming soon.
As reported by Famitsu, Xbox Series S|X consoles will see a price increase in Japan.
The report states that new prices will take effect starting from February 17, 2023. Both consoles in the Xbox Series line-up will be affected, with the Xbox Series X price increasing from 54978 yen to 59978 yen.
Xbox Series S sees a similar price hike, and the console will now cost 37978 yen compared to the previous price of 32978 yen. Both of these prices include taxes. Microsoft believes this was a difficult decision that needed to be made after looking at the market.
This might also raise concerns about the future pricing in other regions like US and Europe. Sony has already raised prices in these regions except the US, so it would not be too far-fetched to imagine that Microsoft is planning to follow suit.
Microsoft has faced various difficulties in adapting to the challenging economy of recent years. The company has laid off thousands of employees, with gaming developers like 343 Industries also being affected.
The future pricing around Xbox Game Pass also remains a mystery. Microsoft’s gaming subscription is set to have its best year yet in 2023. New releases like Hi-Fi Rush have already become a huge hit, providing Game Pass a great boost to kick off the new year.
However, highly anticipated releases like Starfield are still yet to be released. If Game Pass prices are increased in the near future, it could leave a sour taste for some fans, somewhat spoiling an otherwise fantastic-looking year for Game Pass.
While the price hike in Japan might seem concerning, Microsoft has not announced any other price increases yet. The consoles remain highly competitive in other regions, selling much better than the Xbox One.
