Forspoken Direction Was Changed Multiple Times During Development

Unrecognizable In Comparison With Initial Build!

Forspoken is an action role-playing game developed by Luminous Productions and published by Square Enix. The game was released on January 24, 2023, on Playstation 5 and Microsoft Windows platforms.

The game was criticized after revealing the PC requirements in which Geforce RTX 4080 was recommended to play the game at 4k/60FPS. Moreover, Forspoken’s review embargo was lifted on January 23, and Square Enix withheld review codes from various major reviewers, adding more reason to be concerned about the game.

Also, players who had access to the demo were not happy with the game, and now it seems like we know the cost, as the game’s whole direction was changed multiple times during the development.

According to Alex Donaldson, the game went through many changes during development.

The development scope change increased rapidly after Hajime Tabata left Square Enix in 2018. The changes were so significant that the game became “unrecognizable” in comparison with the initial stage of development.

Donaldson further revealed;

The original pitch/plan is unrecognizable in the product as it is now. This happens to many games mid-dev, but Forspoken basically appears to be a particularly extreme case.”
