God of War Ragnarok PC Port Should Launch No Later Than 2024

It Might Get Overshadowed Next Year!

Story Highlight
  • God of War Ragnarok will celebrate its second anniversary this November.
  • Sony is now releasing PC ports faster than before.
  • 2025 is shaping up to be a stacked year, so a PC port of an older title would likely get drowned among the new releases.
  • This is why I believe 2024 is the ideal year for a God of War Ragnarok PC launch.

While the rest of Sony’s lineup is great in its own right, God of War has been my favorite since the days of the PS2. Like many others, I also found God of War Ragnarok the best first-party game on the PS5.

The title will be nearly two years old soon, but it still feels fresh. Sony Santa Monica may be working on new projects for this series, but another game is unlikely to arrive for a few more years.

However, there’s still the PC port to look forward to. In my opinion, the time is right for this port, and Sony should launch it by the end of 2024 at the latest.

Why it matters: God of War Ragnarok could be the most important PC port for PlayStation since it serves as the follow-up to the incredibly successful franchise soft reboot from 2018.

Nearly Every Major PlayStation Exclusive Is Already on PC

Sony’s Recent Trend

Though Sony took its time with the first few PC ports due to the pandemic and initial unfamiliarity with PC gaming,  recent exclusives took around two years to be released on the platform.

For example, exclusives like Days Gone, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Returnal, and Horizon Forbidden West were released on PC just two years after their initial console launch. While there are exceptions to the rule, Sony is now releasing PC ports more frequently.

I have also noticed that none of the games above could meet the success of God of War 2018. Arriving on the platform in 2022, this port stood at the top of PlayStation’s PC releases until recently.

It was finally dethroned by Helldivers 2, a day-one PC launch from Sony. Anyhow, the pattern and God of War’s success suggest that the PC port will arrive sooner rather than later.

The game will celebrate its 2nd anniversary this November, giving the developers an ideal opportunity to launch the PC version. They could also announce the port on the anniversary and launch it next month.

A similar strategy is being used for Ghost of Tsushima, which arrives just two months after the first reveal.

A Stacked 2025

In my opinion, PlayStation needs to give an IP like God of War enough time to shine on the market.

Should the gaming giant release a PC port next year, this may not be possible. We already know games like GTA 6 and Death Stranding 2 are confirmed for 2025. Meanwhile, PlayStation itself is expected to launch Ghost of Tsushima 2 next year.

All of these games, despite launching as console-only releases, would overshadow the conversation of a God of War Ragnarok re-release. If I were at PlayStation, I’d try to avoid this scenario and provide as much breathing room for my biggest IP.

Going by history alone, God of War Ragnarok will be a massive release on Steam. However, Sony needs to be smart about the timing.

Lack of PlayStation First-Party Games In 2024

In 2024, audiences will look at God of War with keen eyes due to its second anniversary. The latter half of the year is also mostly clear of major releases. This is especially the case for Sony.

Apart from a game like Silent Hill 2, a third-party exclusive, PlayStation doesn’t have much to look forward to on the software side. If you ask me, accelerating the number of PC ports in a single year is a smart solution to this first-party drought.

The recent success of Helldivers 2 is an important lesson for Sony. PC is dubbed the biggest gaming platform, with over 34 million users on Steam alone.

It would be a waste to launch an exclusive like God of War Ragnarok on this platform without proper planning. We already know that major releases like Uncharted have failed on PC before, so God of War is certainly not infallible. This is why a carefully planned release is practically necessary, and 2024 is a perfect fit.
