Sucker Punch Aims To Expand the Feudal Japan!

Story Highlight
  • Sucker Punch Productions is planning to expand the Ghost franchise with spin-offs.
  • The goal is to create spin-offs in various formats, not just video games.
  • A Ghost of Tsushima movie is already being developed and directed by Chad Stahelski.

Sucker Punch is set to grow the Ghost franchise with the spin-offs, after the launch of Ghost of Yotei. The sequel was announced at Sony’s September 2024 State of Play event and signals the start of new spin-offs in various formats.

Why it matters: Fans of feudal Japan have a lot to look forward to as the Ghost franchise expands beyond just one game.

Ghost of Tsushima Budget
The Ghost franchise aims to follow in the footsteps of Uncharted and The Last of Us TV shows.

While talking to NYTimes, Nate Fox, Ghost of Yotei’s Creative Director, mentioned that the team aims to grow the Ghost franchise with spin-offs that go beyond video games.

Sony’s original Ghost of Tsushima was a huge success. The game sold over 13 million copies, making it one of the company’s top-selling games. This success has led to the confirmation of a Ghost of Tsushima movie directed by Chad Stahelski, as well as plans for more spin-offs in gaming and other formats.

Over the years, Sony has turned many of its games into multimedia successes. A great example is The Last of Us, which had a highly praised adaptation on HBO in 2023.

With the Ghost series now taking a similar path, starting with a movie adaptation, Sucker Punch hopes to achieve the same success. If it makes a cultural impact, the Ghost series could become one of Sony’s iconic multimedia franchises, reaching audiences well beyond just gamers.

Ghost of Yotei is set to launch in 2025.

Furthermore, Nate Fox also highlighted that Sucker Punch wants to keep the essence of the series, which includes the romance, beauty, and danger of feudal Japan.

The development team’s trips to real Japanese sites like Mount Yotei and Shiretoko National Park have inspired the mood and sense of danger in Ghost of Yotei.

Set 300 years after the original Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei introduces a new protagonist, Atsu, and takes players to the beautiful Mount Yotei during Japan’s Edo period.

Ghost of Yotei is set to be released in 2025, and fans can expect more projects in the franchise that may extend into films and even TV shows.
