Ubisoft has recently cancelled various projects, including the much-anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. In total, the gaming giant has racked up over 25 cancellations in the last decade.

Why it matters: Lately, Ubisoft seems to be cancelling more games than it is releasing, raising questions regarding the future of the studio as it intends to course correct.

Insider Gaming’s recent report outlines that Ubisoft has now cancelled a social sim inspired by Animal Crossing. Dubbed Alterra, this project was in development for three full years before it was cancelled.

For context, the Ubisoft Montreal team was leading this project. This is the same team that worked on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, suggesting that Ubisoft’s social sim was more than an experimental one-off project.

This cancellation comes following a history of mismanagement within Ubisoft. The French gaming giant is looking at company-wide restructuring efforts for now, leaving multiple cancelled games behind in the wake of these changes.

Perhaps the biggest surprise here comes from the fact that Ubisoft’s latest cancellation already saw over three years of development. After putting high-profile remakes like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on the chopping block, it seems nothing is really safe when it comes to cancellations within the studio.
