Next Tomb Raider Game May Be In Trouble!

Story Highlight
  • Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games confirmed the next Tomb Raider title in 2022.
  • Embracer Group’s latest report states that the project has yet to receive a release window.
  • Previous reports also hinted at potential turmoil within the studio.

The Tomb Raider franchise is long overdue for its next major AAA release. Announced multiple years ago, the project was reportedly moving forward smoothly in development until last year, but recent reports pointed to turmoil at Crystal Dynamics.

Although not much is known about the studio’s exact situation, it was part of Perfect Dark’s development, a project cancelled last month. Amid the chaos, Embracer Group’s new report states that Tomb Raider is yet to receive a release window.

Why it matters: Crystal Dynamics’ latest Tomb Raider trilogy performed well. The series has also been kept relevant with remasters and a Netflix adaptation, so fans are anticipating the next big game reveal.

Tomb Raider Update From Embracer Group via Twitter

Embracer Group’s recent report discussed the publisher’s full pipeline of future titles. The gaming giant has a whopping 39 titles in development, including Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and Gothic Remake.

However, the two aforementioned titles have rough quarterly release targets. Tomb Raider, on the other hand, is yet to be dated in the document. In fact, the game has only ever been sparingly mentioned by the studio.

Although fans had hoped to see an official teaser or announcement last year, the game is nowhere to be seen as 2025 approaches its final few months. Some fans have even begun speculating whether the game could end up being cancelled.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released all the way back in 2018, marking a whopping 7-year gap since the trilogy’s conclusion. Because fans have waited so long, many are now growing impatient.

Rise of the Tomb Raider
The Series Will Use UE5 For Its Next Big Entry

Still, it’s worth noting that the project hasn’t been in development for too long. Tomb Raider was officially confirmed to be in development three years ago, so the game is still only halfway into the average AAA title’s lifecycle in the current era. Perhaps an official teaser will finally show up in the near future.
