THQ Nordic Puts an End to Gothic 3 Remake Speculation

The publisher says a recent title change was not teasing another major remake!

Story Highlight
  • THQ Nordic has denied speculation that a Gothic 3 Remake is in development.
  • Rumors emerged after the original game’s title was updated to include the “Classic” label.
  • The publisher appears focused on Gothic 1 Remake, with Gothic 2 potentially next in line.

THQ Nordic has shut down fresh speculation surrounding a possible Gothic 3 Remake. The rumors began after a minor title update prompted fans to believe the publisher could be preparing to distinguish the original game from an unannounced remake.

However, THQ Nordic has now clarified that the change is not connected to a Gothic 3 Remake. While the timing naturally attracted attention, the publisher’s response leaves little room for interpretation.

Why it matters: Gothic is returning through THQ Nordic’s remake strategy, but the publisher is not ready to commit publicly to remaking the entire trilogy.

Gothic 3 “Classic” Name Sparked Remake Rumors

The speculation began after Gothic 3 received an updated title featuring the “Classic” designation. Fans on Reddit interpreted the label as a possible sign that THQ Nordic needed to differentiate the 2006 release from a new version.

That theory was understandable. Publishers frequently add “Classic” or similar branding when multiple versions of a game are available, particularly when an older release remains listed alongside a remaster or remake.

In this instance, however, THQ Nordic explained that the change was simply part of an effort to standardize naming across the Gothic series.

The clarification does not necessarily mean Gothic 3 will never receive a remake. It only confirms that the recent title update was not an announcement or hidden teaser.

For now, THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive remain focused on the Gothic 1 Remake. The project represents a substantial revival of the original RPG, complete with modern visuals, revised combat, and an expanded take on the Colony.

THQ Nordic has already suggested that a Gothic 2 Remake could be possible after the first game. That potential sequel would likely depend on the commercial and critical performance of Gothic 1 Remake.

The publisher has also discussed the remake’s development challenges, player feedback, and future possibilities in our Gothic 1 Remake interview with THQ Nordic. Those comments suggest THQ Nordic is taking a measured approach rather than approving several expensive remakes at once.

A Gothic 3 Remake would arguably be the most difficult project of the trilogy due to the original game’s scale and technical reputation. Rebuilding it would require a significant investment, making strong sales from the earlier remakes especially important.

For now, fans should treat Gothic 3 Remake as speculation rather than an active project. Attention will instead remain on Gothic 1 Remake and whether its reception opens the door for Gothic 2.
