Since the launch of The Last of Us 2 for the PlayStation 5 in 2020, the multiplayer version of the game has been heavily speculated. Although back then, it was stated by Naughty Dog that they had no plans for making, they wouldn’t rule out a possibility in the future:

‘We have made a difficult choice not to include an online multiplayer mode in The Last of Us part 2 after the scope and ambition of the game’s single-player campaign reached a level even the team had not anticipated’. (Naughty Dog)

During Summer Game Fest last week, they finally brought us the announcement of The Last of Us Multiplayer that we wanted for so long. However, the multiplayer won’t tie in directly with the current storyline. The multiplayer component of The Last of Us has grown in scale and quality. Neil Druckman has revealed that a different team is working on the multiplayer feature, which will be released as a stand-alone product in the future.

Druckman also revealed that the development of the mode is far from over. No release time has been provided, nor has a trailer. However, we have our first look in the form of artwork for The Last of Us Multiplayer that shows a brand new character.

Despite what Druckman had to say, a new job listing has emerged on the Naughty Dog webpage looking for an associate multiplayer quality assurance tester/ development support who will work on multiplayer titles from Naughty Dog.

The Last Of Us 2 Multiplayer

As things currently stand, there has been only one multiplayer title in development from Naughty Dog, so this is likely for The Last of Us Multiplayer. Also, when games enter the quality assurance phase, it generally means that the development is near completion as the tester will be testing different game features.

The Last of Multiplayer will feature easily changeable content, a brand new story with new characters, and it won’t force massive downloads on you. The game is tipped for a launch in Early 2023, and if it is indeed in the QA phase of its development, it seems like we won’t face any delays, and it will launch on time.
