The Last of Us has always been praised for its single-player narrative, but the game also features a surprisingly good multiplayer mode. Despite the enjoyable multiplayer mode, Last of Us 2 chose to launch as a single-player-only title.
However, Naughty Dog is working on a new multiplayer stand-alone title set in the Last of Us universe. The game was initially supposed to be included with Last of Us 2 but grew into a much bigger project.
Details on the new multiplayer component are limited at the moment, but a new job listing for Producer-Live Ops at Naughty Dog has now hinted that The Last of Us multiplayer could launch as a free-to-play title.
The job listing claims that Naughty Dog works on a significant multiplayer title. Last of Us multiplayer has already been announced, and this seems to be the game in the job listing.
As seen above, one of the bonus skills mentions free-to-play live titles. It states,
“Proven experience in a production role supporting a AAA, free to play, live title”
This could mean Naughty Dog is looking to adopt a free-to-play model for the upcoming Last of Us multiplayer. Free-to-play games have taken the industry by storm in the last few years, so this does not seem too far-fetched to believe.
Sony has already shown interest in the live-service market, and Naughty Dog appears to be leading the charge. At the moment, Sony is aiming to deliver 10 live service games in the next 4 years.
If Naughty Dog’s multiplayer game turns out to be free to play release, it could also have interesting implications for a potential PC release. Herman Hulst has stated that the company could offer live-service games on day one on PC. Therefore Last of Us multiplayer could be the first title to see a day-one PC launch.
The Last of Us multiplayer is also said to feature easily changeable content. The developers at Naughty Dog have been known to push the boundaries of the medium so that fans can expect lots of surprises from the upcoming release.
Naughty Dog looks pretty ambitious with the multiplayer project, and a free-to-play release could elevate the upcoming release to new heights. With the latest entry, the previous title’s multiplayer component was a huge success, but it remains to be seen if the developers can capture audiences again.
