Spider-Man 2 Finally Wins Game of the Year But Award Came From Sony

Chose Spider-Man 2 Over Baldur's Gate 3!

Story Highlights
  • Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the best superhero games ever made.
  • Like its predecessor, it was selected as a candidate for Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
  • While it failed to win the award at TGA 2023, the PlayStation Blog has declared it the PS5 Game of the Year.

Spider-Man 2 immediately broke records for PlayStation in October. Becoming the company’s fastest-selling first-party title, this release was dubbed the best superhero game by many reviewers.

But Spider-Man 2 still failed to challenge Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios’ RPG took home Game of the Year at TGA 2023, and Spider-Man 2 was left with nothing after it failed to win a single award at the event.

Fortunately, PlayStation has come to the aid of everyone’s favorite Marvel superhero, crowning this first-party launch as the PS5 Game of The Year.

Why it matters: PlayStation is not one to shy away from praising its own games. Last year, the company crowned God of War Ragnarok Game of the Year after the entire industry acknowledged Elden Ring as the best release of 2022.

Like last year, the PlayStation Blog recently published its list of awards for the biggest games of 2023. Baldur’s Gate 3 finished in second place, losing PS5 Game of The Year to Spider-Man 2.

PlayStation seems quite happy with Insomniac Games’ work, glorifying it with a plethora of awards. Apart from Game of The Year, this title won awards for the best storyline, best audio design, best graphical showcase, and more.

PlayStation Blog’s list of accolades for Spider-Man 2 is quite long. Dare we say, the company appears to be tooting its own horn in this situation, but we cannot deny the strengths of Insomniac Games’ latest release.

Following the outcome, many users of social media appear to be mocking PlayStation for this decision. As stated earlier, this is not the first time either.

On the flip side, this could be part of an elaborate marketing strategy from Sony. The PlayStation Blog likely receives millions of views each month, and such accolades for a first-party title might be enough to push some readers to try the game.

In this instance, the award can be considered a stroke of genius marketing.

With these awards coming directly from Sony, it is hard to point fingers at the result. At the end of the day, Spider-Man 2 is, by all means, an excellent title, and this victory finally gives it the prestigious Game of the Year title.
