Spider-Man 2 was always expected to be a massive release. After the last two games sold a combined 33 million units, it was shaping up to be the biggest game on the PS5.
At launch, Spider-Man 2 beat God of War Ragnarok to become PlayStation’s fastest-selling first-party release. In total, it has sold over 5 million units, and a report from Circana reveals it was the best-selling game of October.
Why it matters: This is an impressive result since Nintendo launched a first-party Mario game on the same day. The latter was released to a much wider audience of nearly 133 million Nintendo Switch owners.

According to Mat Piscatella, Spider-Man 2 outsold games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Super Mario Bros. Wonder last month. Previously released games like Starfield, which topped the sales charts in September, were also left behind.
These results pushed Spider-Man 2 into the top 5 best-selling games of 2023. Despite being exclusive to the PS5, it has sold more units than the likes of Diablo 4, Resident Evil 4, and Mortal Kombat 1.
It was also the third most played game on the PS5, beating free-to-play titles like Apex Legends and Destiny 2 to reach this position. Therefore, the game was an undeniable success by all metrics.
This success has allowed Spider-Man 2 to break into the Game of The Year nominations, beating out the likes of Starfield. As Insomniac’s first 90/100 on Metacritic in many years, it has been a resounding success for the studio and PlayStation.
While the report makes it clear that Insomniac’s title has exploded in popularity, another sales boom is expected during the holidays.
With a new model of the PS5 now out in the wild, PlayStation is expected to introduce discounts for the game’s PS5 bundle, enticing millions of new Marvel fans to buy the game.
As a new entry in a successful franchise, Spider-Man 2 has passed every possible test with flying colors. The game delivers a much more technologically advanced experience while keeping the core strengths of its predecessors intact.
