PlayStation is home to many great gaming studios. Over the years, studios such as Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica have produced several award-winning titles for the PlayStation brand. However, PlayStation has recently begun acquiring more studios, adding to an already large team of developers. Recently, they acquired Bungie and Haven Studio, and rumors have been hinting at another acquisition from the Japanese Giant.

Rumors about an upcoming acquisition have been making the rounds for weeks. We previously reported on the possibility of Sony buying a huge Japanese Studio. Multiple industry insiders also confirmed that they had heard of something similar.

However, recent events began pointing to Sony’s acquisition of Kojima Productions. PlayStation recently added Death Stranding to a banner that was previously limited to first party PlayStation titles. This led to speculation of an inevitable announcement from the Japanese company.

Not long after the banner update, Hideo Kojima came out on Twitter to elaborate on the rumors. He apologized for the misunderstanding and clarified that Kojima Productions would continue to remain independent.

This was a bit disappointing for fans who were looking forward to the possibility of Hideo Kojima working with PlayStation once again. However, it seems like PlayStation fans may have something even better to look forward to.

According to a report from industry insider Jeff Grubb, PlayStation’s acquisition was never about Kojima Productions.

As the video shows, Jeff explained that his sources never talked about Kojima Productions’ acquisition. According to Jeff, the upcoming acquisition will be something bigger than Kojima Productions. This is surprising as Kojima is one of the biggest and most influential names in the industry. Something bigger than Hideo Kojima’s studio could mean that Sony is looking to completely shake up the industry. This also lines up with the previously rumored acquisition of Sega, Capcom, Konami or FromSoftware. Perhaps, Sony is looking to buy more than one of these studios.

Both Xbox and PlayStation have made moves to secure studios for their first-party line up of exclusive games. While PlayStation is still playing catch-up in many ways, if these rumors turn out to be true, the tides could be turned in an instant. PlayStation is already closely related to Japanese Studios, so it seems natural for Sony to try and buy one of them. Despite the rumors, Sony has remained silent on the matter. Perhaps, Sony is waiting for the perfect opportunity to make an announcement, and we are certainly looking forward to it.
