Sony Could Create Next-Level NPCs With AI!

Story Highlight
  • Sony’s latest patent suggests it wants to make breakthroughs with AI-powered NPCs.
  • The patent hints at NPCs that mimic players’ expressions and emotions to enable lifelike interactions.
  • These NPCs could also learn from popular streamers and other personalities.

PlayStation has filed numerous patents, including those involving the use of AI. Previously, the gaming giant filed patents for AI-powered podcasts, AI-based game remasters, and more.

Now, PlayStation has filed another patent, spotted by Cheat Happens, that hints at ever-evolving NPCs through AI.

Why it matters: Despite the many leaps taken by modern games, NPCs have somewhat stagnated over the last decade or so.

Sony Wants Highly Advanced NPCs

Sony calls this patent “Information Processing Device” and discusses how it intends to imitate real players using NPCs.

The idea is to track player moods and expressions through microphones and cameras to allow NPCs to mimic their behavior. This could lead to a scenario where a player feels excited after beating a boss, and the NPC joins in the excitement.

Sony also discusses the idea of using streamers and content creators to train NPCs. This could allow for more advanced NPCs that mimic specific personalities while allowing gamers to interact with them.

Ultimately, Sony’s goal with this patent is to create NPCs so realistic that players feel like they are interacting with real people.

The likes of Nvidia have even showcased demos of what AI-based NPCs could look like in the near future, with practically all gaming studios working toward this goal.
