Sony Has Funded Over 120 Games During the PS5 Generation

Sony Aims To Give Indie Games The Same Stage As AAA Partners!

Story Highlight
  • A Sony executive says that the company has funded over 120 games during this generation.
  • The company partially or fully funded these games of different scopes through their development.
  • The team also manages an indie fund to promote smaller games that may not reach PlayStation otherwise.

The discourse around Sony charging a 30% commission on PlayStation Store purchases has grown louder over the years. However, Sony’s VP of second and third-party content goes in-depth into explaining how this fee exactly helps developers worldwide.

Christian Svensson says that all that is earned from PlayStation Store fees is invested back into sustaining a balanced investment ecosystem. In fact, Sony has helped either partially or wholly fund over 120 games because of it.

And this figure does not even include the projects funded through the Hero program.

Why it matters: Sony is playing a huge role in helping fund various games over their lifetime through initiatives like PlayStation Partners and PlayStation Indies, which aim to seek out talent that would otherwise remain hidden.

PlayStation has seen various successful new franchises over the last decade.

In an interview with The Game Business, Christian says the 30% cut is why the company has become a third-party focused platform for studios around the globe, and it wants to remain that way.

Sony’s funding alone supports over 10,000 developers and publishers through an intricate network spread around the globe.

We have funded either wholly or partially more than 120 projects this generation. […] And that’s not counting Hero projects, by the way, which are separate.

Christian adds that SIE CEO Nishino-san would go as far as to argue that a PS5 without its jaw-dropping library is just an empty box. So it’s paramount for Sony to focus on funding games of various scopes and genres to let the entire gaming industry keep growing.

Therefore, Sony sets aside a ‘small diversity set of funds’ and a non-recoupable indie fund each year to deliver ‘some content to PlayStation that might not otherwise get to us.’

PlayStation PC Ports
The brand’s single-player PC ports, however, have not fared so well.

Christian Svensson even believes that this year will be much better than last year for games, and the next one will surpass this year since ‘the trajectory of content is unbelievably positive.’

Do you think Sony is making a big difference in the gaming industry by funding all these games, especially when they don’t even include the Hero projects? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
