Players Spend A Lot Of Money On Roguelikes, Even For Post-Launch Content!

Story Highlight
  • New data shows that roguelikes earned nearly $500 million on Steam alone in gross revenue for 2026.
  • Multiple roguelikes launched this year have sold over millions of copies individually.
  • Players continue to spend time and money on roguelikes, also showing a high attachability to DLCs.

Steam is a popular hotspot for indies and small AA projects that appeal to players before shareholders. The roguelike genre is arguably the perfect example of this phenomenon. These bite-sized games have been some of the best-performing on Steam in recent years.

However, they might be dominating the entire platform at this point. New data shows that roguelikes made nearly $500 million on Steam alone in gross revenue this year.

Why it matters: The increasingly high replayability and focus on player-first content in roguelike games make them among the most appealing options on the market for players looking for quick, bite-sized fun.

Roguelikes generated nearly $500 million gross revenue on Steam before the first half of 2026, Alinea Analytics data suggests.
Roguelikes generated nearly $500 million gross revenue on Steam before the first half of 2026, Alinea Analytics data suggests.

The data by reputable firm Alinea Analytics counts roguelikes like Slay the Spire 2 (6.5 million sold on Steam), Mewgenics (1.8 million on Steam), and Saros (nearly 350k on PS5). Estimates show that players love spending a lot of money and time on roguelikes.

Nearly 100 million users have already played Slay the Spire 2 for over 100 hours in just 60 days, for example.

However, this obsession is not just limited to the base content of these roguelikes. A lot of players return to old roguelikes just to buy their DLCs and pour hundreds of new hours in the process. Roguelike DLCs have better attach rates compared to other genres on Steam.

A perfect example would be the 7-year-old Barony, whose first DLC in 2026 rolled over nearly 200k copies on Steam and made almost $1.2 million in revenue. The base game sold over a million, so that’s a remarkable 19% attach rate for an indie project.

The other examples can be seen in the chart below.

We might see these roguelikes further steal the spotlight in the rest of 2026, even as AAA titles like Forza Horizon 6 and Subnautica 2 make names for themselves.
