Story Highlight
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 was initially doubted internally due to its budget overruns, according to Dan Houser.
  • The team was behind schedule, and there was a lot of pressure as the game wasn’t coming together.
  • According to Houser, the action-adventure was a creative risk and very stressful to develop.

Despite being the fifth-best-selling game of all time, Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t receive enough praise for being one of the biggest showcases of gaming as an art form. Rockstar even considers the 2018 title as the best thing the studio has ever created.

The game has been voted as the greatest sequel of all time by fans and has consistently sold in millions every year, hitting its Steam CCU peak in 2025. However, at one point, there was even doubt inside Rockstar about how the adventure title would turn out.

Why it matters: Dan Houser sticking to his original vision and premise of the game despite doubt shows how important creative control is.

While speaking to Lex Fridman, Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games, stated that there was a lot of pressure on the studio while making Red Dead Redemption 2, as the team went way over budget.

With Red Dead 2 We Were Behind Schedule And we were over budget so much i didn’t want to think about it.

Houser explains that Rockstar Games was behind schedule and the parts weren’t coming together, leading to widespread doubt about whether the sequel would be successful.

According to the Rockstar co-founder, Red Dead Redemption 2 also took many creative risks, which made the entire experience even more stressful. The main storyline followed a cowboy dying of TB, which Houser’s Grandfather inspired, and it wasn’t something easy to put together.

But, as we all know, Red Dead Redemption 2 was a massive success on launch, breaking sales records set by GTA V. Houser doubled down on praise for the cowboy adventure, saying that people looking for life amidst all the violence in the title helped connect it to a wider audience.

Open World Environment In Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 had an emotional story that helped connect it to a wider audience.

Rockstar has been slow in porting Red Dead Redemption 2 to current-gen consoles, but whenever it launches, the title is set to have another surge in sales.
