- AMD’s RDNA 4 graphics cards, specifically the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT, entered the Steam survey rankings for the first time.
- Nvidia still controls the graphics card market with a 72.42% share, while AMD holds 19.13% and Intel sits at 8.05%.
- Windows 11 consolidated its position as the primary OS for PC gaming, rising to nearly 70% of Steam users while Windows 10 continues to drop.
AMD’s newest RDNA 4 graphics cards are gaining popularity among gamers, as the latest Steam Hardware and Software Survey for May shows the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9060 XT appearing in Valve’s rankings for the first time. The Radeon RX 9070 XT is listed with a 1.35% market share and a 1.35-point increase, while the Radeon RX 9060 XT is at 0.72% market share and a 0.72-point increase.
The important thing here isn’t simply that these cards are now selling more, but that Steam appears to be improving its recognition of certain AMD GPUs. Previously, the lack or low presence of specific Radeon RX 9000 models in the Steam survey may have been interpreted as poor market adoption.
However, if Valve was not correctly identifying certain models, the information provided up to that point was incorrect. It’s worth remembering, however, that in April of last year, the Radeon RX 9070 launched as the only desktop RDNA 4 GPU listed separately on Steam, with a tiny 0.17% market share, despite the fact that NVIDIA already had all of its RTX 50 series desktop models featured in the most popular graphics cards table.
Even so, it is necessary not to misinterpret this revision as an easy success for AMD. NVIDIA continues to dominate the Steam survey. AMD has a 19.13% market share in graphics card usage among manufacturers, compared to NVIDIA’s 72.42% and Intel’s 8.05%. In other words, AMD has increased its visibility and, most likely, statistical representation, but the Steam gaming ecosystem remains heavily biased toward GeForce GPUs.
Another important piece of data from May on Steam involves operating systems. Windows 11 maintains its position as the major platform for PC gaming on Steam. The 64-bit version reached 69.76%, up 2.02 percentage points over the month. Meanwhile, Windows 10 plummeted to 23.99%, representing a 1.64-percentage-point loss. Windows accounts for 93.85% of the studied base, while Linux declined to 3.99% (-0.53%) and macOS increased to 2.16% (+0.15%).
This advance of Windows 11 no longer appears to be a steady transition, but rather a consolidation. At this point, the vast bulk of Steam’s gaming population is already using Windows 11. This strengthens its position as the preferred platform for driver, game, and hardware validation.
This is also important for GPU manufacturers as any modifications to drivers, hardware detection, or support for contemporary technologies will have a greater impact on Windows 11, because that is where the majority of users are focused. It’s important to realize, however, that Windows 10 is already in extended support, and many manufacturers have discontinued support for this operating system.
Among CPUs, the trend continues to favour AMD. On Windows systems, Intel’s market share has dropped to 55.02%, a 0.79 percentage-point decrease, while AMD’s has increased to 44.97%, gaining the 0.79 percentage point Intel lost. In other words, Intel remains ahead, although the margin between the two brands on Steam has decreased significantly compared to past years.
