"New Games Without Multiplayer Don't Feel Right"

Story Highlight
  • The creator of Palworld says that a game is most fun when played with friends.
  • He feels that all games should launch with multiplayer modes.
  • According to him, a game without a multiplayer mode doesn’t feel right in this era.

Palworld was one of the wild cards of 2024, as the game instantly became a hit. It made billions in profit, but the budget was just $6.7 million. Such figures are unprecedented, and even more so for a small game.

Following an explosive release, Pocketpair is in talks for a PS5 version. According to the developer, Palworld’s multiplayer elements were a major part of its success, with the Pocketpair CEO believing multiplayer is practically mandatory for modern games.

Why it matters: Multiplayer games often dominate the sales charts and popularity contests, with Helldivers 2 also being an example of this phenomenon.

Palworld Is An Unconventional Game In Many Ways

In an interview with Bloomberg, Takuro Mizobe, the CEO of Pocketpair and creator of Palworld, highlighted the importance of multiplayer mode in games. According to the CEO, playing with friends adds an extra layer of fun to games.

This is why multiplayer and co-op elements are at the heart of Palworld. In the future, PvP is also coming to the game, further expanding its multiplayer through new experiences with existing mechanics.

A game without a multiplayer mode just doesn’t feel right in the era we live today.

While this seems like a controversial statement, industry giants appear to agree. Publishers are more inclined than ever to focus on multiplayer, with EA recently stating that players are interested in live service.

Elsewhere in the interview, the CEO stated that Palworld’s unique aesthetic was a major factor in its success. Compared to Pokemon, this title does not feature a cell-shaded art style.

However, it initially started with a different approach.

Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 Is Extremely Fun When Playing With Friends

We agree with the CEO’s statement to an extent. Palworld is ten times more fun when played with friends. However, this does not mean that every game needs to launch with a multiplayer mode.

If last year proved anything, it was that single-player games still have a place in the industry. Therefore, a balance is the ideal approach.

Mizobe also highlighted how leaving dead bodies behind adds another unique element to Palworld. Unlike most games, these bodies remain on the map, and this decision was made after much consideration.

These are just a few aspects that help Pocketpair’s latest release stand out, making it this year’s biggest hit so far.
