Amazon has decided to let go of 14,000 jobs as the company focuses on investing in AI.
As such, the gaming division was also hit hard and work on MMOs is being reduced.
New World Aeternum support is now ending, but the server will live on throughout 2026.
Amazon has decided to let go of 14,000 jobs as the company is still facing the repercussions of the pandemic and is now aiming to cut costs and invest more in generative AI to improve efficiency.
These layoffs also significantly impacted Amazon’s gaming division and are reducing the work specifically on its MMO titles. As such, the support for New World Aeternum is now coming to an end, with servers shutting down after 2026.
Why it matters: The gaming industry as a whole is at its lowest point, even after this significant growth. Layoffs are never a good sign, and things are looking to get even worse from here.
In an update shared by the game’s developers on their official website, it was revealed that the recent Season 10 update is the final one the game will ever receive, and after 4 years of updates and the recent console launch, the plug on New World has finally been pulled.
We’ve reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.
While future updates are out of the question entirely, the game will continue to live on until after 2026, when servers will be downed. New World Aeternum has been pretty successful for the most part, with this month peaking at 50k players and the all-time peak at nearly a million.
So far, Amazon’s foray into game development hasn’t been smooth sailing, but it’s doubling down on Luna, its cloud-based gaming platform, according to a new memo (via Variety) from Amazon’s VP sent to its games employees.
Other than that, development on other AAA games is being halted, but rest assured, as work with external partners is still continuing. Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider and Maverick Games’ open-world driving game are being developed and remain unaffected by these changes.
At T4G, my task is to cover the latest news around the gaming globe ASAP and with the utmost precision. I adore all the games and respect all the devs behind the amazing games that we get all year. So, whether it’s a PC or a Console game, I got it all covered.

A new report indicates that AI demand is causing a historic global SSD shortage.
Major NAND manufacturers have already backlogged by orders of more than a year.
The shortage could lead to an even higher increment in the SSD prices.
The AI revolution is upon us, and with it has come various challenges. Firstly, the debate about its ethical value is always ongoing, but the increased use is also leading to a shortage of PC components like storage devices.
A new report suggests that the surging AI demand is causing a global SSD shortage. Major NAND flash manufacturers are reportedly behind on the required stock, while the stock has been booked for up to 2026 already.
Why it matters: SSDs provide a much faster and efficient solution than HDDs. Plus, as the demand is mostly from data centers, it’s convenient as SSDs store directly on NAND Flash rather than disks like HDDs.
SSD prices could see a major rise due to a shortage from surging AI demand
With AI taking over, the global SSD demand is at its highest. Big manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Kioxia were all operating at surplus, but are now working at full capacity.
Higher-capacity drives will see the real shortage because those are the ones that data centers and software companies usually require. But naturally, this would mean a price hike for the general users as well.
Major manufacturers already have their stocks booked for up to a year
Earlier this year, it was reported that rising demand has increased SSD prices by 10%. However, with this in mind, things can go from bad to worse, as the shortage would mean an even higher increment in the prices.
However, companies are now transitioning entirely to SSDs, so manufacturing is likely to increase. As they shift their focus away from HDDs, we may see a higher production of SSDs; however, a global shortage remains in place for now.

Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto has called out posts made by the White House and ICE in a new interview.
He said that using Halo for such an ideology makes him sick and is extremely abhorrent.
Another dev who worked on the game stood against the message, saying The Flood is not an allegory for immigrants.
The Halo PR situation only got worse on Sunday when the White House released an AI-generated image of Donald Trump as Master Chief, stating that the President had ended another war with the franchise heading to PlayStation. And, unsurprisingly, the game’s creator hasn’t taken well to such posts.
Why This Matters: Using any video game for fascist political ideology is against the very thing the medium and its creators stand for.
It really makes me sick seeing Halo co-opted like this.”
White House Ends Another War || X
While talking to the Game File, Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto said that he found Trump and ICE using the brand extremely abhorrent, to the point that it makes him sick. Lehto was the main man behind Master Chief’s design, whose silhouette Trump’s face has been plastered on.
The co-creator criticised the post ICE made on X this Monday, which called immigrants the flood and asked people to join the organization, while using imagery from Halo games. Lehto said that seeing his creation being opted for such opinions doesn’t sit right with him.
Halo veteran designer Jaime Griesemer also stood against these posts, saying that the government using the brand to destroy people is “way too far.” The dev said that The Flood is not an allegory for any specific group of people, and he personally finds such an image of Halo disgusting.
ICE posted this on X.
The franchise is already going through the motions on the technical side, with Halo Campaign Evolved struggling in UE5 and players not being happy with the IP going to PS5. Hence, being the mascot for an ideology is probably not something Microsoft wants.

EyeNexus streams only the area you are looking at in full HD to reduce lag and save data.
It could help make VR more accessible and significantly cheaper.
Making use of accurate eye tracking and better prediction, EyeNexus can become successful.
The technology can be applied beyond gaming in VR meetings and AR workspaces.
The promise of VR has always been delivering fully immersive worlds to us but delivering it has always been an issue due to high costs and access. To solve these issues, Cloud VR is used to send high-quality visuals from remote servers to VR headsets. But this process demands a lot of processing power and high bandwidths.
Without powerful connections, users often face lag, blurry visuals, or stuttering. Here is where foveated streaming comes in, which is a process that uses human vision itself to make VR streaming more efficient and less costly.
What is Foveated Streaming?
Our vision is not all 100% HD. The eyes only tend to see sharp detail in a small central region called the fovea, while everything else around it seems blurrier, which we call peripheral vision. Foveated streaming uses this to its advantage to help reduce workload on servers and devices.

How EyeNexus Works
EyeNexus is a system introduced to help make VR less costly and accessible. The technology combines real-time eye tracking with adaptive video streaming. The system constantly monitors the user’s gaze to determine where they are looking and only delivers that area in full definition.
The rest of the image, which is outside the fovea, is rendered in low quality, helping save processing power and data. What we get from this is a better, smoother, cheaper, and more efficient system that delivers the same quality, utilising much less bandwidth.

EyeNexus can also adapt to changing network conditions, for example, if your signals drop, it will reduce the size of the high-quality zone and restore it when the network gets better. This helps ensure that users get a stable and consistent experience without any lag or resolution drops while cloud gaming, even with average network speed.
A Big Deal For Cloud VR
Cloud VR has always struggled to balance real-time performance with visual quality. It used to send two high-resolution images of 90 frames per second for each eye, which demanded too much processing power. But now the technology limits the usage of this data.
Gamers can experience console-quality VR titles such as Batman: Arkham VR without having to deal with heavy costs. Additionally, by using EyeNexus, Cloud VR can provide services to more users with much less network load.
Challenges and Limitations
Despite its promise, EyeNexus still has many problems. The biggest problem with the technology is efficient eye tracking. The system depends on knowing exactly where the user’s gaze is. If the monitoring lags behind even a millisecond, the user can see a blur or flicker when their gaze moves.
Virtual Reality Gaming – Image Credits ( Business of Esports)
Another significant issue is gaze tracking. The human eye shifts focus many times per second, and trying to predict these movements can be challenging. Network stability also plays a vital role; if the network speed fluctuates too often, the foveated image must constantly update itself to avoid any issues.
Also, not all VR headsets come with an eye-tracking feature, which limits their compatibility. However, as more hardware makers implement eye tracking in their devices and as gaze prediction models improve, these issues will inevitably fade.
Broader Impact
Foveated rendering has much broader potential than just gaming. Making use of the technology, professional workers could work together in virtual workspaces without having a need for high-end computers. Similarly, students can also benefit from the tech as it will allow them to attend online classes, unlike ever before, more immersive and interactive than ever.
Virtual Meetings – Image Credits (Diginomica)
In Augmented Reality (AR), foveated streaming could allow lightweight glasses such as the Virtue Pro to display realistic 3D overlays without any need for heavy local processing. Imagine attending virtual concerts such as the Travis Scott Fortnite concert in real-time and in full resolution without any lag, as if you were really there. The point being that this technology could have limitless implications in the real world.
EyeNexus showcases how intelligent foveated streaming can drastically help improve Cloud VR. Instead of making GPUs or networks render visual details in high quality, the technology focuses resources on where they are actually needed. If the technology becomes a standard in the industry, it could help make VR accessible to more individuals.

Valve is often criticised for involving gambling-like monetization mechanics in its games.
DayZ creator has slammed the company, saying it doesn’t get enough criticism for it.
The policies are not only bad for the industry but mostly for the players who invest.
Gabe Newell and Valve are often hailed as the best in the industry for providing high-quality games, great platforms, and good deals for gamers. However, all that glitters is not gold, and the company has been called out for its monetization policies.
DayZ creator has slammed Valve for its gambling-related monetization methods in games. He said this is something the company doesn’t get enough criticism for, and he’s disgusted by these mechanics in games.
Why it matters: This isn’t the first time anyone has called out the company; they have, more often than not, been criticised for gambling-like mechanics, loot boxes, and for exploiting their player base.
Valve is known for integrating gambling monetization methods in its games.
Speaking to EuroGamer, Dean Hall expressed his disgust with Valve’s monetization policy. He said it has no place in gaming and that if developers don’t have any issues with it, they should release the data for people to study.
Hall’s comments reflect the Loot Box system found with CS2. The market has become a global phenomenon worth billions of Dollars. Its recent crash in value even led to mental issues with those investing in it.
It’s something I think Valve does not get anywhere near enough criticism about. I’m honestly disgusted with gambling mechanics in video games at all.
– Dean Hall
DayZ creator says the company should get more criticism for its mechanics.
Loot Boxes are also criticised for causing distress among players; therefore, Valve changed them slightly, so players now pay for what’s inside rather than the box itself. However, it is still unhealthy for many.
All in all, while most people do love Steam as a platform, they share Hall’s sentiments about Valve’s monetization policies, and we saw from the recent crash that it can harm people’s mental state.

Critics and fans are panning Double Dragon Revive as a step backward for the historic franchise.
The beat-’em-ups’ 3D characters and lacklustre environments are getting a poor reception from fans.
Overall, the game has failed to revive the franchise and subjected it to further notoriety.
In 2025, the gaming industry is one of the most valuable media ecosystems on the planet, even if the sector has slowed down a little after exponential growth. And the medium would never have reached these heights without arcade gaming popularising it in the ’80s.
Titles like Final Fight and Double Dragon were at the top of the food chain during this golden age. However, in the decades that have passed, both of these IPs have become shadows of their former selves, and Double Dragon has proved that once again with an attempted revival.
Why it matters: A legendary fighting title like Double Dragon deserves a better development team that understands its soul.
Double Dragon Revive is being panned for its 3D models.
Double Dragon Revive, a new side-scrolling beat ’em up developed by Yuke’s, is being panned by critics across the board, only scoring a 33% on OpenCritic. Criticism is aimed at the game’s lackluster 3D models, which depart from the series’ usual 2D art style.
Furthermore, the uninspiring environments of Double Dragon Revive are also a contributing factor, bringing the overall experience down several folds when combined with the mediocre 3D design.
Some critics were even more scathing, saying that the title feels less like a revival and more like Arc System Works exhuming the rotting corpse of the historic series. Fans also expressed frustration with the series going backwards after Double Dragon: Rise of the Dragons gave players some hope.
Fans hope a developer with love for the original titles can infuse some soul into the IP.
Despite all the negative reviews, some parts of Double Dragon Revive received tame praise. Critics especially liked the game’s combat system, saying it could be employed in the future. However, the attempted revival has fallen flat overall, and the historic beat-’em-up is going to be relegated to notoriety once again.

Call of Duty ranks second place across Xbox and PlayStation, while Battlefield 6 is nearly five places behind.
Black Ops 7 is yet to launch, and these stats are for the week ending on October 18th.
RedSec, the free Battle Royale mode for Battlefield 6, will drive the game’s player count much higher.
With EA back to form with the release of Battlefield 6 this year, Call of Duty is finally forced to a back-foot stance. Even industry veterans have crowned Battlefield 6 the biggest FPS of this year, with former Blizzard boss saying that the game will ‘boot stomp‘ rival Call of Duty.
However, Activision has repeatedly dismissed this threat, saying that Call of Duty is too big to die, and turns out they were entirely on point. Call of Duty was the second-most-played game across Xbox and PlayStation, while Battlefield 6 held 6th and 7th place on both consoles.
Why it matters: Even though Battlefield 6 is one of the series’ best entries, the franchise has had a rough past few years, and to become the best FPS on the market, it still needs to be consistent enough to draw all players from Call of Duty.
Circana’s List Of Most Played Games (US Only)
Circana shared a list of the most-played games across Xbox and PlayStation for the week ending on 18th October. Without a surprise, Fortnite dominated the list across both consoles, while Call of Duty was at number 2 and Battlefield 6 at 6th and 7th places.
This week was right after Battlefield 6 released, and for a fair comparison, Black Ops 7 has yet to be launched. Also, Call of Duty is at its lowest point yet, with player counts declining across Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
RedSec Launches October 28th
However, the Battlefield 6 player count will increase in the coming days with the release of the free Battle Royale mode. With RedSec, perhaps Battlefield 6 can overtake Call of Duty since the release of Black Ops 7 is unlikely to turn things around for the franchise, which is in such a rough state.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 has won the Best Game of 2025 award at the CEEGA.
It won against other heavy-hitters like Silent Hill f, Stalker 2, and The Alters.
It was nominated for 5 categories, but managed to bag the most important one.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is among the best releases of this year. The much-anticipated sequel to the 2018 original arrived earlier this year and captured a massive audience thanks to a great gaming experience.
The recognition has now gone massive as Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 won the Best Game of 2025 award at the CEEGA, which caters to games developed in Central and Eastern Europe, which have been plentiful this year.
Why it matters: The Czech Republic-based studio outdid itself with the sequel, not only capturing the essence of history combined with fantasy, but also being one of the best-optimized games we saw this year.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 won the best game award at the European Awards.
Warhorse Studios won the outstanding accolade at the Central & Eastern European Game Awards. Along with the GOTY award, it also secured five nominations, and while it lost out on others, it managed to bag the biggest one.
The competition was quite challenging as other nominees included Silent Hill f, Stalker 2, and The Alters, all of which have been extremely successful. It, of course, doesn’t include games like Clair Obscur as they’re from different regions.
The KCD2 team took to X to thank everyone involved for the award.
Some of the other winners include Silent Hill f, taking home the awards for best visuals and sound design; The Alters won the best story award; and Stalker 2 secured the best technology award.
Nonetheless, it is great to see the game getting the recognition it deserves. Apart from this win, it is also a solid contender for the GOTY award at The Game Awards, but the competition will be even tougher.
