Story Highlight
  • An insider claims that the original Tomb Raider is getting a full-fledged remake treatment.
  • The remake is supposed to be announced at the upcoming Game Awards show.
  • The game has already received a remaster and a remake in the past.

Fans of the Tomb Raider franchise have been itching for a new project for a long time. While rumors about Crystal Dynamics’ AAA open-world game have grown over the last few weeks, it seems like we are also getting an entirely different title.

A notable insider with a decent track record claims that the original Tomb Raider is getting a full-fledged remake, which is supposed to be announced at The Game Awards on December 11. This remake could be planned for a launch next year.

Why it matters: The Tomb Raider franchise is about to experience a resurgence soon because Crystal Dynamics has also been working on an AAA project for a few years.

Tomb Raider remake
An insider claims the original Tomb Raider is getting a remake.

As clarified by @RaidersSociety on Twitter, their sources claim that a new remake of Tomb Raider 1996 will appear at The Game Awards. Yes, this comes after the original game already received a remaster and a remake in the past.

However, the insider has yet to reveal more details about the new remake. Perhaps it could be a complete reimagining that uses story elements from the original but fits in the new survivor timeline.

Regardless, this rumor aligns perfectly with the scoop of reliable insider Tom Henderson, who claimed that the Tomb Raider team at Eidos Montreal is developing an ambitious open-world action-adventure third-person game planned for next year.

Whether these are the same games is yet to be known, so we suggest taking the rumors with a pinch of salt.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider Unreal Engine 5
Fans have been wanting a new Tomb Raider game for a long time.

The timeline for the original TR’s remake also fits because the series will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. Additionally, the ending of the Netflix show after Season 2 also ties into the first Tomb Raider.

On a side note, Crystal Dynamics’ AAA open-world Tomb Raider project is also said to be progressing smoothly despite radio silence from the studio. It is set in India and features Lara Croft at her prime.

Do you think the original Tomb Raider remake will be on par with modern AAA games, or is it a remake on a much smaller scale? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
