According to the latest rumors, NVIDIA could be preparing a new high-end graphics card to sit between the GeForce RTX 5080 and the flagship GeForce RTX 5090. Recent reports suggest the company may have abandoned plans to launch the GeForce RTX 5080 Ti. Instead, a cut-down version of GeForce RTX 5090 with “SE” branding will launch.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 SE would use a partially disabled variant of the GB202 processor, which has 14,080 CUDA cores. This would be 31% more cores than the RTX 5080 (10,752 CUDA cores), but around 35% less than the RTX 5090’s 21,760 cores.
It’s a sensible configuration, as it will be substantially more powerful than the RTX 5080 but not powerful enough to compete with the RTX 5090. However, because the RTX 5090 already costs more than €5,000, it will not compete with anything.
The RTX 5090 SE’s power consumption would be 500W, a significant increase over the RTX 5080’s 360W and a slight decrease from the RTX 5090’s 575W. NVIDIA recommends pairing it with a power supply of at least 1,000W, which is also the requirement for the RTX 5090.
Rumors claim that this GPU will have 32 GB of GDDR7 memory and a 384-bit interface. This is a substantial drop from the GeForce RTX 5090’s 512-bit memory bus. This would reduce bandwidth from 1.79 TB/s to 1.34 TB/s. In other words, it would lose precisely 25% of its transmission capacity.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that NVIDIA is apparently developing a GeForce RTX 5080 SUPER. This would be an RTX 5080 model with 24 GB of GDDR7 memory and the same 256-bit bus. The RTX 5080 SUPER would thus be a direct upgrade, while the RTX 5090 SE would be a step up to the GB202 silicon, avoiding the need for an RTX 5080, RTX 5080 SUPER, and RTX 5080 Ti as the most powerful option.
The recommended pricing for the GeForce RTX 5090 SE is roughly $1,500, which falls between the $999 RTX 5080 and the $1,999 RTX 5090. However, as previously stated, the RTX 5090 has a recommended price of $1,999 or €2,099, with the cheapest variants starting above €5,000. So it’s no surprise that this RTX 5090 SE could be a good deal if purchased at launch. Once that stock is out, it’s reasonable to expect it to approach €3,000.
