- The Nintendo Switch 2 has seen over 2.2 million pre-order requests in Japan so far.
- This demand has exceeded any expectations the company set for the upcoming launch.
- Nintendo may be able to beat the PS2’s record of selling around 1 million units at release with the new console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has millions of gamers excited about the future of hybrid console gaming. Despite controversies surrounding hardware and accessory pricing, a new AAA game MSRP standard, and other issues, expectations remain high for the upcoming hardware.
Nintendo itself has also chimed in on the conversation, stating that the current demand for the console far exceeds expectations.
Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming hot off the heels of the gaming giant’s most successful hardware, giving it the opportunity to shatter records and set new standards at release.
According to President Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s recent efforts to accept pre-orders through lotteries on the Nintendo store have been incredibly successful. The company reports that approximately 2.2 million applications have been received from Japan alone, setting the stage for an incredible launch day.
Unfortunately, Nintendo will not be able to meet this demand on launch day. The company has stated that those who end up missing their chance during the first lottery will be able to try again in the second lottery automatically.
Nintendo has also ramped up production following unexpected demand, with plans to ship as many units as possible within the first year. Anyhow, this demand means that a new record could be on the horizon for Nintendo.
The PS2 currently holds the record for the most launch weekend console sales in Japan, shipping nearly 1 million units. Nintendo’s statement implies that this record should be easily beatable for the Switch 2.
Similarly, the original Nintendo Switch is edging closer to beating the PS2’s lifetime sales. As such, the Switch family may beat multiple PlayStation records by 2026.
