High Expectations for Switch 2: The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is generating significant excitement, with projections suggesting it could surpass the sales of its predecessor.
-
Unrivalled Market Position: Nintendo currently enjoys a dominant position in the console market, with no major competitors expected to launch new consoles in 2025.
-
Potential Challenges and Uncertainties: Switch 2’s high price tag could be a significant hurdle.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is starting to raise expectations as more details are revealed. Today, we saw a hands-on model of Switch 2, and now the research firm DFC Intelligence has published a report projecting its sales for its first year.
According to them, it could break the record of its predecessor, though the data is a bit sketchy.
What exactly are we referring to? We have to look at the data on units sold provided by Statista. As we can see, Switch 1 barely exceeded 2.5 million units in its first year.
This is because Nintendo counts the fiscal year from March 31; that is, April 1 is a new fiscal year. As we know, Switch was launched on March 3rd, so it only had 28 days to be counted in the fiscal year.
Knowing this, the number of actual units should be around 15 million, which is tremendously high if we consider that at its peak, it achieved almost 28 million units by 2021.
Best of all, the Switch 2 forecasts are better and could potentially take the Switch’s sales record even without the aforementioned time lag, as DFC Intelligence claims that up to 17 million units are expected in 2025 alone, which in Nintendo’s fiscal year could mean a few million more.
There Are No Rivals In The Console Market; No New Launches
It may seem that the Switch 2 has to face rivals like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and a whole range of new-generation smartphones that are more than interesting for gaming with the right accessories. The reality is that it doesn’t.
According to what they said, Valve will not launch a new Steam Deck 2 for quite some time; Sony already has its PS5 Pro on sale, Microsoft is neither here nor expected, and no other big company can overshadow the Japanese.
They have the entire 2025 market to themselves. If DFC Intelligence’s numbers are correct, Nintendo can hit that record-breaking sales target for the Switch 2 in its first year of availability—and could even break its predecessor’s 2021 sales of 29 million at later points because console sales are always post-launch.
Normally, between 2 and 4 years later. The only drawback that Switch 2 will have is its alleged high price, which, as we can see, could reach 500 dollars. Are users willing to pay so much for obsolete hardware just to get a few improvements for the same type of console and concept?
Well, the estimates seem to say yes, and without a problem. That’s what it means to maintain a loyal community that prioritizes things other than hardware or graphics.
