The past few weeks have been quite eventful for the gaming industry, as there have been some high-profile acquisitions. A couple of days Netflix acquired Warner Bros. However, a new report reveals that initially, the plans were quite different.
Before deciding on going with Warner Bros. and its game studios associated with them, Netflix wanted to acquire EA, Fox, and Disney. The gaming giant is set to be acquired by a Saudi Arabian investment group.
Why it matters: Netflix has, for quite some time trying to make a name for itself in the gaming industry. It started with smaller indie games, but now they seem to want to do things on a much bigger scale.
A couple of days ago, it was revealed that Netflix had taken over WB for a ridiculous $83 billion. So, not only publishing rights for its movies, but also with its gaming IPs have been transferred to the streaming mammoths.
EA, too, is going private, and the Saudi fund is said to own almost the entirety of the company. But things could’ve been very different as Netflix has emerged as the other company that was interested in acquisition (via Bloomberg).
Nonetheless, Netflix made its decisions and now owns all major IPs, including Batman, Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy, and more. It seems that the company is very interested in going big with its games.
Netflix itself has some huge IPs that can translate well into games; these include Stranger Things and many more. Nonetheless, the WB acquisition could be shaky too, as Paramount has launched a hostile takeover as well.
