Gran Turismo Sport Removed From PS Store Without Announcement

Servers Also Being Shut Down This Month!

Story Highlights
  • Gran Turismo Sport was released in 2017 as a multiplayer game.
  • It was previously announced that the online services of the game would end on 31 January 2024.
  • Without any prior notification, the game has been delisted from the PlayStation Store this month.

Gran Turismo is one of the best racing franchises, rivaling the best of the genre in terms of visuals and gameplay.

PlayStation’s major releases for the IP in the last two generations have come in the form of Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7, but the former is soon being discounted. The game’s online services will be shut down on 31 January, but the game has now been suddenly delisted from the PlayStation Store.

Why it matters: Gran Turismo 6, a game released in 2013, is still listed on the store and purchasable on the PS3, which makes this move from Sony questionable.

It should be noted that Gran Turismo Sport is mostly an online-only title. On 1 December last year, add-ons that can be played offline were no longer purchasable. However, ahead of its services being discontinued, PlayStation has completely removed the game.

The offline mode, while disappointing, still meant that Gran Turismo Sport had something to offer those looking to get their racing fix from the IP without an active internet connection.

What makes this announcement so surprising is the fact that no announcement was made beforehand. The official blog does not list a particular reason either, though it likely has to do with the fact that most of the racing game will become unplayable soon.

We believe the success of Gran Turismo 7 and the problematic licenses of vehicles present in these games may have played a role in this decision.

However, Gran Turismo 6 is still available to purchase digitally, making the decision quite upsetting for those who enjoyed Gran Turismo Sport over other offerings of this iconic franchise.

Gran Turismo 7 is now the best PlayStation racing game on both PS4 and PS5, recently considered the best-looking racing game by analysts. This title can serve as a replacement for Gran Turismo Sport despite the disappointing decision from Sony.

Previously, rumors suggested Sony was working on a PC port of this title, but the latest report reveals that no such port is in development.
