- Shawn Layden believes that the success of a live service title is based on pure luck.
- He says that there are no predefined GaaS elements that guarantee success.
- The genre has become overly saturated over the years, leading to massive failures.
Live service games have always been a mixed bag. While the industry has been fixated on the genre, it has become so saturated that only a few titles stand out. This has led to massive failures over the years, with titles like Concord.
A former PlayStation boss has weighed in on the genre and slammed GaaS metrics, saying that live service success is pure luck. He said the success of such games is purely by luck, and there is no defined way to lift them.
Why it matters: With single-player titles, you can take risks and stand out, as there’s still plenty to explore. With games as a service, you don’t have any formula, so them succeeding in the market is just luck.
Shawn Layden says that Games As A Service titles are largely successful by accident so the idea that you can build a game with all GAAS metrics and it will be a success is ridiculous. pic.twitter.com/u9aNY70XxE

Talking to Kiwi Talkz, Shawn Layden talked about how live service games are hard to establish in the market. He said GaaS titles are largely successful by accident, so thinking that there are defined elements is ridiculous.
This is true, considering many studios have tried to capitalize on a formula that worked with certain other titles, only to find that it didn’t work out at all. Over the years, we’ve seen so many live service games fail due to that.

Players are hungry for something new and creative; therefore, titles that don’t even have massive budgets but are still creative thrive. The biggest examples in recent years include titles like REPO, Meccha Chalameleon, and more.
