- The Final Fantasy franchise has sold over 195 million worldwide units.
- It is a 10 million increase in sales compared to last year’s official sales figures.
- The Dragon Quest franchise has also sold more than 91 million lifetime units.
Final Fantasy is one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time. Dating back to the late 80s, it has been around for a long time. Because its popularity is still higher than ever, it is no surprise that the Final Fantasy series has sold over 195 million units so far.
Why it matters: Final Fantasy is Square Enix’s most popular franchise, and that is clear from the lifetime units it has sold.
For the last few years, Final Fantasy was mostly a PlayStation exclusive, but recently, Square announced a shift towards multiplatform, starting with the PC port of Final Fantasy 16.
According to a new update, Final Fantasy has topped 195 million units while Dragon Quest sits at 91 million units sold worldwide. This is a 10 million unit increase in Final Fantasy sales compared to their last sales figures revealed in September 2023.
Despite this, Square Enix’s latest financial report was disappointing. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sales weren’t as expected, pushing the company’s stocks to a 13-year low. As a result, they announced that all Final Fantasy games will now be available on Xbox.
Square Enix is currently undergoing major changes. It has shifted its strategies and even reduced its game lineup to focus more on quality.
