Fans Are Happy For Baldur's Gate 3!

Story Highlights
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the biggest releases of 2023, but it was underestimated by many.
  • The CRPG won Game of the Year at The Game Awards three days ago.
  • The fandom has come together to admit that it deserved the title.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the great hits in 2023 that turned the RPG genre upside down. The game conquered Metacritic in little time, rivaling the biggest launch of the year with a Metascore score of 96/100.

Even after two months of release, the title averaged 200K Steam players daily, a feat seldom seen for single-player titles. Living up to the buzz, the CRPG won its first game of the year award at Golden Joystick

Then, Baldur’s Gate 3 won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023. While some were unhappy with this choice, general reception has been encouraging, with fans coming together to agree it was the most deserving of this award in 2023.

Why it matters: Before release, Baldur’s Gate 3 was misjudged by everyone. Even Xbox misjudged it and expected the game to be worth $5 million for Game Pass.

In a competition where games like Spider-Man 2 were completely ignored, Larian Studios came out on top. Nominees like Alan Wake 2 and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom were favored by many, but Baldur’s Gate 3 proved too influential for these titles.

On Reddit, many fans claim this result was justified and unsurprising. Since the CRPG captured everyone’s attention and the closest competition in terms of critical reception was a Zelda sequel, the former was an obvious winner.

While Alan Wake 2 was considered a wildcard, Larian Studios also proved that wildcards do not always win.

Fans have compared Baldur’s Gate 3 to the likes of Elden Ring, claiming that it will be played for over a decade. With over 17K endings and complex gameplay systems encouraging player experimentation, the choice was easy for The Game Awards.

Similar comments are found on other subreddits, including Alan Wake 2’s. While this game competed with the CRPG, fans have been able to accept the defeat due to Larian Studios’ incredible showing this year.

Leading up to the event, this CRPG was tied for the most nominations with Alan Wake 2.

While the latter won various awards for itself, Baldur’s Gate 3 completely dominated The Game Awards. Besides Game of the Year, it won five other awards, leaving little room for other games to shine despite their strengths.
