Fallout New Vegas Can’t Be Remastered As Bethesda Doesn’t Have Enough Engineering Skill, Says Designer

Expert Verified By

The Studio Does Not Know How To Assemble The Source Code, Per Chris Avellone.

Story Highlight
  • A Fallout New Vegas remaster is difficult, as Bethesda doesn’t have the engineering know-how to make it.
  • The game’s source code is only present in parts at the company, and it doesn’t know how to assemble it.
  • As per Chris Avellone, there are workarounds to this, but they will be similar to Oblivion Remastered.

Despite being one of the most iconic RPG franchises in gaming, there hasn’t been a mainline Fallout title in over a decade. Bethesda has assured fans that more games in the series are in the pipeline, with the next mainline entry set to be the studio’s most ambitious.

At Present, however, remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas are the only projects in development, according to the rumor mill. But, as per the senior designer on New Vegas, Bethesda cannot remaster the game because they don’t have the capability to do so.

Why it matters: A Fallout New Vegas remaster without the source code could turn out to be a technical mess just like the Oblivion remaster last year.

In an interview with TKs-Mantis, designer Chris Avellone said that fans shouldn’t expect a remaster of Fallout New Vegas as Bethesda doesn’t possess the engineering know-how to pull it off.

I don’t think Bethesda has the engineering knowhow to make a remaster of New Vegas at all

Avellone explained his stance, revealing that the company offered New Vegas developer Obsidian a $10,000 check for the game’s source code. However, the studio’s CEO, Feargus Urquhart, decided to waive the offer and declined to give the source code to Bethesda.

The former New Vegas developer said he doesn’t know the reason behind this decision, but Bethesda could have remade the game anytime with the source code. Furthermore, Avellone stated that Bethesda does have parts of the code and isn’t empty-handed; the publisher just doesn’t know how to assemble it.

Fallout Remakes
According to reports, both Fallout 3 and New Vegas are set to get remasters.

Of course, there are solutions to this problem, with the Fallout New Vegas designer suggesting that Bethesda could utilise Unreal Engine in the same way it did with the Oblivion Remaster. Furthermore, considering how both studios are now owned by Microsoft, assembling the source code might not be that big of an issue.
