Death Stranding 2 Crosses 2 Million Sales Thanks To Successful PC Port, Sales On PS5 Also Boosted

Expert Verified By

The PC Port Has Increased The Game's PS5 Sales By 2x.

Story Highlight
  • Death Stranding 2 has crossed 2 million sales globally after its Steam port shipped almost half a million copies in a week.
  • The title has generated $150 million in revenue already and has become a hit among Chinese players on Steam.
  • The action-adventure game’s launch on PC also boosted its sales on PS5 by more than 2x.

After months of waiting, Death Stranding 2 finally launched on PC this month and surprised many with its incredible debut. The Hideo Kojima game amassed more than 50k concurrent users on Steam, becoming the 5th best-performing PlayStation single-player title on the platform.

Now, sales estimates suggest that the Death Stranding 2 port was so successful that it even caused a boost in sales for the PS5 edition of the game.

Why it matters: Death Stranding 2’s impressive sales performance gives Sony a lot to think about, as there is a decent audience for its games on Steam.

As reported by Alinea Analytics, Death Stranding 2 has crossed 2 million sales globally, thanks to its triumphant PC port. The action-adventure title has already shipped 425k copies on Steam, accounting for 21% of the game’s overall sales and helping it cross the $150 million mark in gross revenue generated.

In addition, the release of Death Stranding 2 on PC also boosted its performance on the PS5. Sony discounted the title to coincide with its launch on Steam, and that resulted in the game’s PS5 sales more than doubling to an average of 12.5k copies sold daily after March 19, reaching a peak of 12.8k unit sales.

Before Death Stranding 2 launched on Steam, daily shipments on PS5 peaked at around 5k copies sold during the last holiday season when the game had a discount. Hence, the PC port acted as a re-marketing tool for the Kojima Productions title.

Alinea analytics also revealed that Death Stranding 2 has been a massive hit among Chinese players on Steam, as they account for 50% of the game’s audience. Hence, Sony definitely has a sizeable audience on the platform that would be left behind if reports regarding its new PC port strategy are correct.

Do you think Death Stranding 2 is proof that Sony should not stop releasing its games on PC, or is the company correct to keep titles exclusive to the PS5? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
