Pearl Abyss Boss Acknowledges Crimson Desert Suffers From a Weak Story

"Could Have Done A Better Job"

Story Highlight
  • Pearl Abyss CEO admits that Crimson Desert does suffer from a weak story.
  • He says that the attention was diverted to gameplay, but that didn’t turn out great either.
  • Initially, the game started out as an MMORPG, which disrupted the direction.

While the public perception of Crimson Desert took a bit while to change until gamers actually found out what the RPG had to offer, the opinion that the game’s story stayed the same, as it is the most underwhelming part of it.

Even the game’s publisher thinks so, as Pearl Abyss’ boss just came out clean, admitting that Crimson Desert indeed suffers from a weak story.

Why it matters: Usually, gamers prefer a strong narrative over other elements, as the world feels mundane without it. Had it been for a good story, Crimson Desert would have become one of the best RPGs, or had the potential for it.

Crimson Desert
People Still Seem To Love The Game Despite The Flaws

In the shareholder Q&A session for Pearl Abyss (via Yonhap News Agency), CEO Jin Young apologized for the game’s weak narrative, stating:

I sympathize to some extent with the disappointment users feel regarding the story.

Young said that they could have done a better job with the story. Further explaining why they fell short in this department, he said that they prioritized gameplay in what time they had left.

The production team tried to make up for the shortcomings in the remaining time, but ultimately, we focused on strengthening the gameplay, which is what we do best

Still, the gameplay wasn’t perfect either. Crimson Desert was plagued with issues at launch, and the control section for the game was pretty complicated. Recent patches have made the game better, but it’s still not there.

Crimson Desert
The RPG Offers Hundreds Of Hours Of Gameplay

Also, it is notable to mention that Crimson Desert initially started out as an MMORPG before being made into a single-player game. Now, the same multiplayer mode alongside DLC expansions has been teased for the game as part of the post-launch support.
