- A Pearl Abyss executive says Crimson Desert’s size may have hurt its critical reception.
- She also noted that critics played a version of the game without many important updates.
- The game sold 7 million copies despite receiving not-the-best review scores initially.
Crimson Desert has sold millions of copies since its release and generated nearly $500 million in revenue.
Despite its many accomplishments, however, the game was initially not received the best. According to one Pearly Abyss executive, this happened likely due to how big the game was and how little of it reviewers likely experienced during their hands-on time.
Why it matters: Many consider Crimson Desert among the best modern open-world titles, so its critical reception is all the more interesting.

Crimson Desert has crossed 7 million sales despite landing far from universal critical acclaim, and Pearl Abyss appears to believe the game’s sheer size played a role in that gap.
According to The Game Business, Pearl Abyss Europe CEO Lybee Park suggested reviewers may not have had enough time to fully absorb what the open-world RPG was trying to do.
She noted that critics likely focused mainly on the story, but the game’s strengths lie in the many details packed throughout its open-world. This is perhaps why Crimson Desert did not click with them.
They had limited time. The classic approach when they review the game is to follow the main story line. Our unique charm is spread across our in-game world.
She also highlighted that critics played a version of the game that didn’t include the day-one update, which was a huge deal. This is exactly why the game eventually ended up selling 7 million copies despite launching to modest reviews at first.
