Being Developed On Next-Gen Xbox Dev Kits!

Story Highlight
  • The next Call of Duty game will reportedly skip last-gen consoles.
  • Modern Warfare 4 is being developed on the next-gen Xbox dev kits.
  • It will also bring a massive overhaul to the game engine to address issues.

The Call of Duty franchise has been stuck in the same loop for recent years. Because the games have been released on both current and last-gen consoles, there hasn’t been a massive step up in either visuals or gameplay, but this might change soon.

According to a new rumor, the next Call of Duty will finally drop last-gen console support and will release on new hardware only.

Why it matters: As the game will exclusively be available on newer hardware, the developers can try new things including innovation with the gameplay and enhanced visuals.

Call of Duty is rumored to be giving up on last-gen support

According to a well-known Call of Duty leaker, TheGhostOfHope, the next title which is reportedly Modern Warfare 4 will release in 2026 and won’t come out for the last-gen consoles.

The leak further suggests that the new title will have a more traditional style UI, instead of the revamped one like Black Ops 6. In addition, the IW engine will see a massive overhaul to avoid shortcomings with the previous versions of the game.

This also clearly suggests that Xbox doesn’t plan on leaving the console space soon, as the development is being done on the dev kits for the next Xbox. Activision might also completely skip Warzone if Verndansk doesn’t retain players.

Nonetheless, it is overall great news for Call of Duty fans as they’ve complained about how the game is being held back by last-gen hardware. For now, take this with a grain of salt, but if it turns out true, the title in the series will be really exciting.
