- Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has stated that Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Sharma listed this as a successful entertainment venture for Xbox, alongside the Fallout and Minecraft adaptations.
- The shooting franchise has grossed a little bit more in revenue than the movie juggernaut.
It won’t be wrong to say that Call of Duty is among the most recognisable gaming franchises on the planet. Even when it underperforms, the series can sell enough copies to find a spot in the annual best-sellers list.
But ever since the IP has been put under the care of Microsoft, Call of Duty has failed to live up to the lofty expectations set by the company. Despite its recent shortcomings, however, the company’s CEO believes that it is the biggest entertainment entity on the planet.
Why it matters: There is no doubt that Call of Duty’s impact in gaming is similar to what the MCU has achieved in film. However, it isn’t easy to figure out which entity has had a greater cultural impact worldwide, and that statistic matters more.

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Xbox boss Asha Sharma stated that Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new CEO didn’t expand on this take, but listed the shooting franchise among Xbox’s successful entertainment ventures alongside adaptations of Minecraft and Fallout.
If you think about it, we’ve got the number two show of all time on Amazon [Fallout], Minecraft was top 5 in 2025, Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So it all measures.
From a monetary perspective, Sharma isn’t too far off. In almost two decades, the MCU has made over $32 billion at the box office, excluding home media earnings. On the other hand, Call of Duty has exceeded $35 billion in game sales since its inception, reaching the $30 billion mark back in 2022.
Hence, the Activision shooting franchise is edging out Marvel in the financial head-to-head, albeit by a very small margin.

However, Similar to Marvel, Call of Duty has been in decline over the past few years, with playtime and revenue falling across all platforms in 2025 following the mixed reception to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Therefore, it’s safe to say both of these franchises need some rethinking if they want to maintain their current status.
