Blizzard Is Returning To The StarCraft IP!

Story Highlight
  • A report reveals that Blizzard and Nexon are partnering for the StarCraft IP.
  • The company also holds the service rights for Overwatch Mobile in Korea and Japan.
  • Fans of the franchise will be glad to find that Blizzard is finally returning to the IP.

StarCraft is one of the biggest forgotten IPs from Blizzard that hasn’t seen the light of day since 2017, and that too in the form of a remaster. Since then, rumors about a new title have been swirling over the internet, but without any confirmation.

According to a new report, Nexon has been chosen as the negotiating partner for StarCraft IP after winning against various other major Korean companies in a bidding war.

Why it matters: Blizzard seems to be finally going back to the StarCraft IP, but this time it isn’t handling all of the development itself; instead, it’s partnering with Nexon for it.

Rumors of Blizzard returning to StarCraft had been going on for quite a while

As reported by Money Trading Broadcast, Nexon has been chosen as the partner for the StarCraft game, and has also gotten the distribution rights for Overwatch Mobile in Korea and the Japanese regions.

MTN reports that the bidding had been going on since Q4 last year for Major Korean companies to partner on future projects. Nexon had to face other major companies like NC and Netmarble for the rights.

StarCraft holds a nostalgic value and is very influential in the Korean market, therefore driving interests from big names. However, Nexon hasn’t worked on a similar title before, so it’ll be interesting to see what approach it takes.

Nonetheless, it is a good sign for fans who desperately wanted a new StarCraft. While it may be very far at this point, at least we will be getting a new title, but whether it remains an RTS or takes a different approach will be seen later.
