Assassin's Creed Odyssey Team Is Main Developer!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows is being led by Ubisoft Quebec, the team behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
  • The game is being developed on the Anvil Pipeline engine, which requires more effort than past releases.
  • Because of the new engine, 15 other studios are supporting the project.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows looks phenomenal in its latest trailer, portraying the Japanese era with two very different main characters.

Ubisoft is quite famous for making great-looking trailers and disappointing afterward, so there has been some contention regarding this reveal in the fandom. However, the studio states a new engine is being used for this project.

The engine promises completely revamped visuals and gameplay, with a total of 16 developers involved in the project.

Why it matters: The sheer number of developers involved in the creation process sounds promising. This means that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be highly polished from the beginning.

Ubisoft Quebec is the project’s main developer. This team has worked on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in the past, inspiring confidence among audiences. However, the official Assassin’s Creed Shadows website lists 15 other supporting studios.

  • Ubisoft Belgrade
  • Ubisoft Bordeaux
  • Ubisoft Bucharest
  • Ubisoft Chengdu
  • Ubisoft Kyiv
  • Ubisoft Manila
  • Ubisoft Montpellier
  • Ubisoft Montreal
  • Ubisoft Odesa
  • Ubisoft Osaka
  • Ubisoft Pune
  • Ubisoft Shanghai
  • Ubisoft Singapore
  • Ubisoft Sofia
  • Ubisoft Tokyo

Some of these names may sound familiar. For instance, Ubisoft Bordeaux launched Assassin’s Creed Mirage last year, while Ubisoft Singapore released Skull and Bones earlier this year.

While it may seem odd for so many studios to be working on a single project, the game is being developed on a completely different technology, the Anvil Pipeline engine, which may have led to the requirement of additional resources.

Activision takes a similar approach to supporting each release of Call of Duty, signifying the importance of this series for Ubisoft.

It should also be noted that these studios are likely to be working on their own projects, as well. For instance, Ubisoft Bordeaux teased another classic Assassin’s Creed Mirage-like entry for the future.

Nonetheless, Ubisoft clearly has high ambitions for this title, so it’s doing everything it can to ensure a high-quality release. The team has already revealed plenty of information, but more is still to come.

Recent details have confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes with a map around the same size as Egypt from Assassin’s Creed Origins. The game could also require an active internet connection at all times, in addition to skipping Steam at release.
