After years of tumultuous releases, the Assassin’s Creed franchise finally bounced back this year with the release of Black Flag Resynced. The title reached its annual sales target in just under two weeks, opening with the highest concurrent player count of the franchise on Steam.
On the other hand, another older title in the series has brought Ubisoft some unexpected success recently, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey seeing a huge spike in players thanks to Christopher Nolan’s new movie. As it turns out, the push from the film has made the RPG the new magnum opus of the IP.
Why it matters: An eight-year-old title picking up new players in 2026 is a testament to Ubisoft’s detailed world-building and its ability to capture Ancient Greece so perfectly in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is now the highest-rated game in the series on Steam, with 89% of its reviews being very positive. The title has surpassed 2010’s Assassin’s Creed 2, which stands at 86% on the platform, and owes a big chunk of its success to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Thanks to the box-office success of the film, many players turned to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to experience Greek mythology in a more detailed manner. The player count of the game saw a huge surge across all platforms as 250k new players joined to try out the Ubisoft adventure title.
On Steam, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s concurrent player count doubled following the movie’s release, reaching a peak of 15k players in August despite being a 2018 single-player adventure game.

Following the push from Nolan’s The Odyssey, the title was able to captivate new fans, as reviews over the last month have been very positive, hailing the expansive recreation of ancient Greece that requires over 100 hours to fully take in.
Do you think Ubisoft should take the franchise back to a similar time period to explore another ancient civilization? Is a title set in the Roman time period the logical next move for Assassin’s Creed? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
