Despite having a challenging year overall with chip and PlayStation 5 shortages, There has been another upset for PlayStation users. The recent report suggests that there might be a delay in the development of PlayStation VR2, and the launch can be delayed till the first quarter of the year 2023.
Sony revealed the final design of the PlayStation VR2 for PS5 last week. Despite the lack of a firm launch date or window, Sony has promised more updates on the headset and titles in development in the coming months.
The new model has a similar white-and-black colour scheme to the PlayStation 5 (the company claims the two products were designed in a way to complement each other). While it has the same overall design as the original PS VR, it includes a lens adjustment dial, a new vent design, and a slight weight reduction. The PS VR2 contains a small textured PlayStation logo hidden on the front and rear bands of the headgear, similar to the PlayStation 5 and its DualSense controller.
It’s been nearly five years since the first PSVR was released, and it’s time for a refresh. While it is compatible with the PS5, a special adapter is required, and the experience is very last-gen. SONY’S other VR efforts, such as delivering free VR games to PlayStation Plus users, have been problematic without an upgraded headset to pair with the PS5.
There have been talks of a PSVR2 debut at the end of the year. Still, according to the PSVR Without Parole YouTube channel, which was the first channel to reveal the existence of Horizon Call of the Mountain and the technical specifications of the new viewer, the device will not be released at Christmas, but rather in the first quarter of 2023.
The channel’s creator claims to have spoken with many individuals who have verified that PlayStation VR2 will be released in Q1 2023, or in simpler words, the first quarter of next year. What is the explanation behind this? The PlayStation 5’s installed base, which is still reasonably tiny, and the semiconductor issue, primarily contributed to the PS5’s restricted availability more than a year after its introduction.
On the other hand, many others are doubtful, though. Is it feasible that Sony has shown the PSVR2 design so early, knowing that the launch would not happen this year? That is very unlike Sony. Other talks also suggest that PlayStation might open a pre-order option soon for VR2; therefore, it is pretty difficult to believe whether the rumour is true or not.
At the time, it is only a rumour with little evidence of it being valid, and there’s no confirmation of any sort yet; nonetheless, we expect to learn more between spring and summer.
