Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Made $1.2 Billion On PS5, But Failed To Crack $100 Million On Steam

The Game Sold An Impressive 2.3 Million Copies This Year.

Story Highlight
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has generated a whopping $1.3 billion in sales since release.
  • The game has made over $1.2 billion on the PS5, with Steam only bringing in $70 million in sales.
  • The Insomniac title is still selling like hotcakes in 2026, shifting 2.3 million units.

Calling the PS5 generation a flurry of misguided leaps from Sony wouldn’t be too far from reality. The company has made multiple decisions this decade that haven’t panned out well, including but not limited to, cancelling the production of physical discs from 2028 onwards.

Another move from Sony that has turned out to be detrimental in hindsight was putting PlayStation exclusives on Steam, with the ports not bringing in enough money to offset the PR hit. As it turns out, one of the biggest first-party titles from the gaming giant has failed to crack even $100 million in revenue on PC.

Why it matters: Sony leaving PC behind might be the best decision it has made in recent times, as no exclusive title stands a chance on the platform if Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can’t make any money.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has made $1.3 billion so far on PS5 and Steam, but the latter accounts for less than 10% of the overall gross. The Insomniac title has sold 19.1 million copies across the board, making a whopping $1.2 billion from PS5 sales.

However, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has only generated $70 million in Steam sales, meaning the platform only accounts for 5.3% of the overall revenue. Considering how the game was one of the worst PlayStation first-party launches on the platform, opening to 3x fewer concurrent users than the first title, these numbers do make sense.

An evergreen title like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which sold 2.3 million copies in 2026 alone, not even managing to generate $100 million through its PC port, sheds some light on why Sony is abandoning the strategy.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the second highest-grossing PlayStation exclusive this generation.

Any mention of a multi-platform system for exclusive games was removed from the company’s financial report earlier this year, and developers behind Saros have remained tight-lipped regarding a PC port. Hence, Sony has seemingly decided to cut its losses, but given how the PC gross didn’t even hold a candle to the company’s PS Store revenue, the strategy won’t be missed.
