GTA 6 is shaping up to be the biggest launch in gaming’s history. Its impact is expected to be so gargantuan that the US government expects over a billion dollars in losses in only its first day, as Hollywood also prepares for a major shake-up at the box office.

Germany is handling the game’s launch by offering a legal way for some employees to take paid time off work through Bildungsurlaub. The state-backed program grants leave for certified educational courses, letting gamers take 3 days off for GTA 6.

Why it matters: Multiple businesses worldwide are offering time off for GTA 6 on November 19th, as many gamers are expected to skip workdays anyway. Governments are also exploring various strategies to handle the resulting economic impact.

The course dubbed ‘Open World Games: Lessons from a Digital World’ is being offered by Bildungsurlaub from November 18-20 for €119. It is promoted as an educational program that focuses on learning through open-world games, including GTA 6.

It will allow participants to complete in-game assignments to study topics like storytelling, digital culture, motivation, teamwork, and community building. They will be prompted to discuss their observations as part of the curriculum.

Open-world games are becoming a learning space for digitization, creativity and innovation. Keynotes, workshops and guided game phases combine digital culture with professional future skills.

For example, one lesson will examine how Easter eggs and hidden discoveries can increase player engagement in open-world games. Another aspect will look into how businesses, brands, and educational programs can apply similar ideas.

This program is limited to 60 participants, and seats are already filled at the time of writing. However, more seats could open in the future, allowing more gamers to take paid leave for GTA 6.

On a similar note, the Australian government also jokingly posted a guide on how to take time off for GTA 6. It argued that, besides paid leave, gamers can only apply for general unpaid leave if their employer agrees.
