- Australia’s workplace regulator has shared a guide on taking job leave for the GTA 6 launch.
- The agency explains how unpaid leave works using the game’s launch as an example.
- If an employee has no paid leave remaining, they can apply for general unpaid leave only if the employer agrees.
It’s not controversial to claim that GTA 6 is shaping up to be the biggest and most eventful launch in the gaming scene so far. The hype has grown so much that Hollywood anticipates a real shake-up at the box office.
Governments and employers globally are also bracing for huge economic impacts and productivity losses on GTA 6 launch day, as many gamers aim to take paid and unpaid leave to enjoy the open-world experience.
Why it matters: Many gamers worldwide are expected to skip work when Rockstar Games’ magnum opus launches on November 11, so governments are already preparing to handle the brunt of the economic impact in their own ways.

On Instagram, Australia’s national workplace regulator, the Fair Work Ombudsman, is now guiding players on how to take unpaid leave legally when GTA 6 launches.
The humorous post explains the country’s employment laws by presenting a fictional scenario where the game launches tomorrow. It argues that gamers can only apply for general unpaid leave if the employer agrees.
It jokingly rules out several categories of unpaid leave as valid reasons, such as carer’s leave, community service leave, and parental leave. No other category of unpaid leave legally applies to GTA 6’s monumental launch, so Australians with no paid leave will be at the mercy of their employers.

While the post is lighthearted, GTA 6 is expected to have a severe impact on the world’s economy. For example, the game is expected to cause over a billion dollars in losses on US soil in only its first day.
In the past, even the US Army has given soldiers four days off to enjoy GTA 6 if they re-enlist, and many other businesses are also providing similar days off because workers would be absent anyways.
Do you think the GTA 6 launch will impact the workforce worldwide? Do you expect the damage to be in the billions, like analysts have predicted in the past? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
