GTA VI Reportedly Requires PS5 Firmware 14.22

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation Game Size reports GTA VI’s PS5 software requirement has risen to firmware 14.22.00.00.
  • The reported requirement may affect consoles staying on older firmware, but a GTA VI-specific security purpose is unconfirmed.
  • Sony has not issued a statement attributing the requirement to GTA VI piracy prevention.

According to PlayStation Game Size’s reading of PlayStation Store backend data, GTA VI currently lists PS5 firmware 14.22.00.00 as a minimum requirement. Push Square reported the claim, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed the reason for the requirement.

Push Square notes that the reported minimum previously stood at 14.10.00.00. Requiring newer firmware could reduce compatibility with consoles running older vulnerable versions, but that is a potential security effect rather than proof of Sony’s intent. Since that number previously changed, the final launch requirement may differ.

Why the Sudden Move?

GTA VI is expected to draw substantial demand, making compatibility requirements particularly relevant for players who have not updated their consoles recently. Older firmware versions sometimes retain known exploits, so a higher minimum could have security benefits. That possibility is not evidence of a GTA VI-specific anti-piracy campaign.

The timing is why the report has attracted attention among players following PS5 security.

If the reported minimum remains in place at launch, players will need at least that firmware to run the PS5 version. Online services may also have separate update requirements.

Minimum system-software requirements are common on consoles. A store listing alone, however, does not reveal whether a specific version was chosen for security, game features, or compatibility testing. Any actual effect on piracy would be difficult to establish from the firmware requirement alone.

Sony may update the required system version again before release, and no direct statement links this version to a particular jailbreak. The reported minimum is useful for compatibility planning; its anti-jailbreak rationale remains unconfirmed.

The practical question for players is whether the listed firmware minimum remains unchanged when GTA VI launches.
