- The Nintendo Switch 2 has been jailbroken through a vulnerability allowing native code execution on the system.
- A modder has also shown Mario Kart World running with mods on the console as a demonstration of this jailbreak.
- Nintendo could patch the exploit in the coming days, but this could be the first of many modding efforts for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched last year, and in 2026, the console already has quite an interesting lineup of games. In addition to first-party releases like Donkey Kong and Mario Kart World, it boasts third-party releases like The Witcher 3: Remastered and more.
Upcoming releases like Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake are also coming next month, and these games could soon become a lot more accessible since the Nintendo Switch 2 has now been jailbroken.
Why it matters: The original Nintendo Switch was jailbroken very early in its lifecycle, and it appears its successor is now following suit.
i jailbroke the nintendo switch 2
so i modded cinnamoroll, peter griffin, hatsune miku, and more into Mario Kart World, a switch 2 exclusive
now watch my friends and i get cooked by bots
learn more and get the exploit https://t.co/ykjgyfrFRp pic.twitter.com/BOcFhejRz1

The video above shows Mario Kart World in action on the jailbroken Nintendo Switch 2, featuring modded characters like Peter Griffin and Hatsune Miku.
As for the jailbreak itself, it makes use of vulnerabilities in a specific Nintendo Switch backwards-compatible game, Smile Basic, to run the software-only, tethered jailbreak. The modders responsible for the jailbreak have also made use of OpenAI’s Codex, making it possible to run homebrew, mods, save files, etc. on the Nintendo Switch 2.
One drawback with the jailbreak is that it gets wiped out of memory if the console is restarted. Moreover, should Nintendo patch out the vulnerabilities within Smile Basic or remove it from the eShop, the mod will become ineffective.

The modder has explained how this jailbreak works in more detail on his own blog, noting that it works on the latest firmware version 23.0.1. This is certainly very interesting, especially for how new the Nintendo Switch 2 is.
However, Nintendo might take swift action against the user in the coming days, given the company’s history of cracking down on those responsible for jailbreaks and modding.
