They Say They're In An Excellent Position and Proud of It!

Story Highlight
  • EA recently announced 400 layoffs and the shutdown of its BioWare studio.
  • Amid the purge, the company hails itself as the No. 1 Western gaming publisher.
  • They say they’re in an extraordinary position but need to change their business strategy.

EA recently became another big name to lay off employees and shutter a major studio. The publisher announced that it’s closing the once-legendary BioWare, the studio behind some of EA’s defining hits like Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

In an internal memo, following the layoffs and BioWare shutdown, EA described itself as the number one publisher in Western HD gaming. That’s quite a big claim to make since they haven’t had the best-rated releases in recent years.

Why it matters: If the company is talking in terms of revenue generation, they might have a point owing to the success of its sports game, but this didn’t seem like the right time for it, just after the catastrophe.

In the same memo that announced the layoffs and BioWare closure, EA also boasted that it is the top publisher in Western HD gaming. They continued that they are in an excellent leading position and are proud of it.

Today, we’re the number one publisher in Western HD gaming. That’s an extraordinary position to lead from, and one we should be proud of.

Bioware Shut Down
The company has shut down BioWare in the middle of Mass Effect 5’s development

So, this latest purge wasn’t completely to cut costs since the company is doing really well; it was more of a business model restructuring. However, BioWare was in the middle of developing Mass Effect 5, so it’s a bit harsh.

It’s true that the studio never really recovered after the disaster of Dragon Age: Veilguard, but we haven’t had a new Mass Effect in ages, and this could have been a brilliant opportunity for a studio redemption.
