- A new FAQ reveals that GTA 6 is now officially eligible for the Game Awards this year.
- A game must release on or before Friday, November 20th, 2026, to be eligible. GTA 6 releases a day earlier.
- Therefore, Rockstar’s magnum opus would most likely appear at TGA 2026, unlike the rumors suggested.
GTA 6’s November 11th launch is expected to shake the entire gaming industry, as its pre-orders have already surpassed a staggering 6 million figure sold over a month before launch. Additionally, Rockstar officially confirmed it to be the most expensive title ever developed.
However, many reports previously suggested it would miss the Game Awards 2026 nomination window by launching too late. That doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.
A new FAQ by The Game Awards reveals that this cutoff date is now set at November 20th this year, effectively making GTA 6 officially eligible to appear at the event and compete for the ultimate Game of the Year trophy.
Why it matters: With releases like Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light, 2026 has some worthy GOTY contenders. But GTA 6’s presence at The Game Awards could make it extremely challenging for many previously expected titles to hog the ultimate trophy.

As pointed out in the new FAQ at the Game Awards site, games must be publicly available to gamers on or before Friday, November 20th, 2026. Therefore, GTA 6 would be eligible for most, if not all, of the categories to compete with the rest of the contenders.
Multiple reports also suggested reviewers will get a copy of GTA 6 before the end of this month, giving many critics time to thoroughly review the game for multiple weeks. This would give the game enough of a reception at launch to appear at the show.
The Game Awards has yet to announce any nominations so far, but it would be weirder for GTA 6 not to show up now that an ornamental path has been paved for it.

Regardless, both Rockstar Games and TGA host Geoff Keighley have yet to elaborate on GTA 6’s presence at the show.
Do you think GTA 6 will end up curb-stomping the rest of GOTY competitors at The Game Awards this year, or will it fall victim to the Paris Syndrome effect? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
