GTA 6 is expected to dominate the games industry when it arrives later this year, but the game is already out of the race for bagging all five major Game of the Year awards like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Expedition 33.
Now, a prominent member of the games industry suggests that GTA 6 may not even be able to secure a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards.
Why it matters: Rockstar Games is pushing its franchise to the limits with GTA 6, so some might see the loss of a big win at The Game Awards 2026 as a real shame.
Alanah Pearce, former IGN journalist and God of War writer, suggests that GTA 6 will not be able to qualify for a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards.
She says that the game launches on November 19, but the nominations for The Game Awards are announced typically two weeks before the show itself. Because GTA 6 launches on November 19, it being nominated would mean that jurors had less than a full week to play the 80-100 hour game.
It would be indicative of a jury who voted for a game they didn’t play.
Alanah Pearce also pointed out that the jury voted for the game selection on November 12 last year. Therefore, it seems unlikely for the jury to accommodate GTA 6, even if they want to.
The explanation does make a lot of sense, and even if The Game Awards were to make exceptions for GTA 6, the team will not be able to fit the game’s release schedule into the show’s timeline itself.
Therefore, GTA 6 is expected to miss out on yet another of the five aforementioned Game of the Year titles.
